What day is Smurf Day? ›

Every year on the Saturday closest to June 25th, Global Smurfs Day celebrates these little blue cartoon characters.

According to the 2011 Smurfs movie, Smurfs are native to the European country of Belgium and were originally known by their French name Schtroumpfs, as documented in-universe by Peyo.

The Smurfs were created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, better known by his pen name "Peyo” who was born in Brussels on 25th June 1928. The original Smurf comics were published in French and later translated into Dutch, English, German, and Spanish.

The Grey Smurfs are the negative duplicates of the Smurfs who appeared in the comic book The Smurf Menace. The Gray Smurfs were so named due to the darker tone of the Smurf clothes they wear.

Most Smurfs are said to be about 100 years old, but at the advanced age of 546 (553 in the 1980s series episode "The Littlest Giant"), Papa is the oldest Smurf and the leader of all Smurfs. Despite his age, he is still quite energetic.

According to Peyo's biographer, Stéphane Rozenberg, the decision to change their color was made by Peyo's son Nicolas and animation director European Productions. They thought that blue would be more fitting for a fantasy creature than white.

As he works on chopping down his first tree, that Smurf gets stung by a fly known as the Bzz Fly that turns his skin jet black, drives him insane and reduces his vocabulary to the single word "Gnap!".

Smurfette (French: La Schtroumpfette) is one of the protagonists from the comic strip The Smurfs. Smurfette was created by the evil wizard Gargamel, the Smurfs' archenemy, in order to spy on them and sow jealousy.

At first, Smurfette looks like a male Smurf with scraggly black hair, a large nose, and rather surly eyes, the only thing separating her from the rest being her white dress; not exactly the attractive temptress that Gargamel tried to create.

The multi-colored Smurfs appeared in The Egg and the Smurfs. They are a trio of ordinary Smurfs who use the magic egg to wish to be other colors instead of blue: one becomes yellow, one red and the other one becomes purple with green stripes.
